Regular Notch

Used on regular corners. One unit of regular notches will do one corner section 8 feet high with one or two extra notches in most log sizes. The overhang is the same as the log size. Approximately half of the notches will be single notches and half will be two notches per log. You cut the length that you need. The notch can be cut at the center to make a male blind notch if required.

Half Log

The top 1/2 (Log Starter Course) is used to start the log wall. The walls at 90 degrees to the 1/2 Log use their regular grooved and notched logs.

The finish course of the 1/2 log is not always used. You may place it on top of the log wall to set the trusses on. It can be rotated to match the slope of the roof pitch.

Random Notch

Notch is at random in logs up to 11' length. It is used on intersecting log walls. Two Blind Male notches can be used if required to make an extra long run over window, doorway, etc.

Cuda Notch

Used as supports. Can only be notched at 90 degrees to the log. Cuda notches are on round logs, not wall logs.

Joist and Rafters

Round log with about 2" flat spot on top. Joists are used on floor systems and Rafters are used on Roof Systems. Notches, if needed, are put in 180 degrees to the flat. The notch can be covered with a Regular notch or a Cap Log.

When using Log Joists that are to be supported by a log wall we recommend not notching into the Joist Log. As an alternative we offer the Saddle and Cap Logs, which allow for variations in length of the Log Joist and width of the Log Walls.

When using Rafters that are supported by a log wall we recommend notching the rafter and filling the space between the rafters with a half log. You will have to custom fit the Half Log.

Regular grooved logs may be attached under the joists or rafters to provide additional support in case of unusual span or load requirements.

Joist Cap Logs

Used to set joist logs into a log wall without notching the log joist. The use of the saddle and cap logs will allow for variation in the length of joist logs and the width of log walls and offers possibilities of a deck on the outside of the house. The customer may specify the length of overhang on the cap / saddle logs that will be used on the corners of the house if they need to be extra long to accommodate large roof overhang. When building with cap and saddle logs, you have to cut to length and butt together your special corner saddle logs and regular saddle logs.

Male Blind Notch

Same as regular notch, except that the notch ends at its center. Can be used anywhere a regular notch or random notch is used, butting up another male blind notch to the first one. Also used with female blind notch.

Blind Female Random Notch

Notch is at random on logs up to 12 feet. It is used on an intersecting log wall where no log overhang is desired. It is used with blind male notches.

(When drawing blind notches, be sure to blacken them in and label it blind notch.)

Female Blind Notch

Notch is at random on logs up to 12 feet. It is used on an intersecting log wall where no log overhang is desired. It is used with male blind notches.

(When drawing blind notches, be sure to blacken them in and label it blind notch.)

Salmon Notch

Used to build to an existing log wall. It will be necessary to custom fit each log to the wall for a tight fit.

Butt Notch

Used to build to an existing log wall. It will be necessary to custom fit each log to the wall for a tight fit.

Navajo Notch

Used in Navajo plan with a log post standing on end or bay windows. When designing a floor plan using Navajo notches, you must have an even number of overlapping regular corners in the house.

Half Log Siding  (full log saddle notch corner)

Siding is used only where regular logs will not work. The weight of siding is half that of regular logs. But after you frame in the wall and attach the siding, much of the weight savings is lost. We recommend regular logs in most cases.

The siding is a regular grooved log up to 12 feet long, cut down the center. For the saddle notch corners, we cut the log to the center of the notch. You would cut the notch at the jobsite to make a right or left hand outside corner siding notch. The corner piece is used on walls or inside corners if needed.
